Logo 2Join us Saturday, October 1, 2016 for the inaugural Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Manager’s 5k, presented by Vetoquinol.

We are excited to announce that our host farm this year is scenic Ashford Stud, the home of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah! Walkers, trotters, gallopers, and sprinters of all ages are welcome, but please leave your four-legged friends at home. Most of the race will be run on paved farm roads and there is a lovely, short section of turf on the course.

Participants receive a long-sleeved, dri-fit shirt and goodie bag. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers of each age group and overall male and female winners will receive an engraved julep cup. Packet pick-up will be on Monday, September 26th between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm  at the Blue Stallion Brewing Co..  10% of all proceeds will go to the life adventure center. Please note that there will be NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION. You can pick up your race packet the morning of the race, but we strongly suggest you pick it up on Thursday, if possible.

Race proceeds will benefit the Life Adventure Center in Versailles, which provides programs and camps for military veterans with PTSD, and their families. If you are on limited turn out or are retired from racing, you can still help by volunteering on race day, so please sign up! Hope to see you there!

Bill oppenheimBILL OPPENHEIM was born August 7, 1949, in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in Kansas, and graduated with B.A. (1971) and M.A. (1974) degrees in English from his hometown Wichita State University. He has worked professionally in the thoroughbred business ever since, as a journalist, market analyst, and consultant. He worked in New Zealand as a journalist for the INL Print stable of publications in 1974-75, and in Louisiana, as the editor of the bimonthly Louisiana Horse magazine from 1976-79. In 1978 he started the twice-monthly newsletter Racing Update with his then-employer, the late Jack Lohman, and he moved to Lexington, Kentucky, as the publication’s Editor and Publisher in 1979. During the first Golden Age of Thoroughbred Breeding (1978-1985), Racing Update, which took no advertising (imagine that today!) and existed entirely by subscription, and Oppenheim became known as the independent analysts used by industry professionals. During that time they originated the APEX method of stallion ratings; took over and developed Catalog Update, the forerunner of today’s sales supplement books; and originated Barn Order lists, which are now included in most sales catalogs, as well as many other analytical innovations.

In 1993 Bill moved to Scotland with his wife, Lou, a British native, and he sold Racing Update in 1995. Since 2000 he has been a weekly columnist (usually on Wednesdays) for the industry’s leading internet daily, Thoroughbred Daily News, for which he has now written over 500 columns and counting. Bill has also worked as a consultant to horse operations for over thirty years. His private matings consultancy clients have bred 13 Classic winners since 1992, including two winners of the G1 Epsom Derby and two winners of the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and he has also done consulting work for sales companies, industry and trade organizations, and many other industry professionals. In 2008 he was elected as a Member of the Breeders’ Cup ‘big board’, and he served on the Breeders’ Cup Racing and Nominations subcommittee which helped originate its International Stallion Nominations program in 2011.

2016 KTFMC Golf Scramble

24th Annual Challenge Cup Scramble

Greetings and welcome to the 24th renewal of the Challenge Cup Golf Scramble. This year our event will be held on June 21, 2016 at The University Club. Registration will begin at 11:00 AM and we will tee-off at 12:00 PM. For those of you returning, you know how much fun this event is. For those new to the scramble, we hope you too have fun on the course and know that you are also contributing to a worthy cause.

This year the proceeds from the scramble will primarily benefit the Kentucky Equine Management Internship program (KEMI), as well as, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF). The Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club is grateful for your continued support and looks forward to raising additional funds for these wonderful programs.

This is your invitation to participate in the Challenge Cup Golf Scramble as a Corporate Sponsor, Hole Sponsor, and four person team. As a reminder, all four person teams will be required to have an A, B, C and D player on their teams. This year we will once again be allowing the entry of individuals. Individuals electing to enter as such, will be placed on a team upon arrival at the Challenge. In addition to our regular sponsorships, we would like to remind everyone that we are open to new sponsorship ideas, and also have room in our goodie bags for items. Attached you will find a link directing you to the appropriate forms and we can also be reached at golfscramble@ktfmc.org.

This year, teams will be provided with a boxed lunch at the start and a BBQ cookout during the awards ceremony. Snacks and beverages will also be readily available throughout the course.

Prizes will be awarded to teams from each course for first thru third. Once again this year, we will have a playoff between the first place teams from each course to crown an overall champion. In addition to prizes, the champions will also have their name engraved upon the perpetual trophy. For the third consecutive year, corporate sponsors will be eligible for a prize only for them, and will be randomly drawn during the awards ceremony.

  • Box lunch will be provided in the carts, and a barbecue dinner will follow the golf scramble. Beer, water, and soft drinks will be provided on the course, please do not bring your own.
  • There will be a first, second and third place team winner for both courses and an overall champion team decided by a one hole playoff between the first place team from each course.
  • The team closest to the pin and team with the longest drive will also be awarded prizes.
  • Dress Code: All guests must wear appropriate golf attire. This would exclude items such as cut-off, tanks, t-shirts, and jeans.
  • Teams should have an A,B,C, and D level player. A minimum of two drives per player must be used during the 18 holes of play. Teams are formed without KTFMC input, but individual entries will be placed on a team that is not full by our Golf Scramble committee members.

     The Life Adventure Center (LAC) in Versailles is part of the largest wooded area in Woodford County and has miles of trails for every type of rider. After the ride  join in a BBQ picnic cooked by Thin Blue Smoke BBQ. During the picnic LAC will open their climbing wall and zip lines wall for the KTFMC! Along with a hay ride, bouncy house and a possible kickball rematch, there will plenty of fun for all ages!

Things to Know:

  • To Participate in activities at Life Adventure Center you must turn in a completed Consent Form. They will have them on site to fill out or you can click here and download the form now.
  • Zip line participants must be at least 9 years old and fit securely into the harness to be allowed to participate. They must also be able to complete a 30 foot climb.  Staff will make the determination on site for those in question.
  • The Club is providing the same fabulous pulled meat and cowboy baked beans and potato salad as last year along with water and soft drinks. You are welcome to bring what you want to contribute!
  • The words “kickball” and “rematch” have been tossed out there, so make sure you are dressed for any activity that you may join in!

Steve Koch joined the NTRA in 2015 as the Executive Director of the Safety & Integrity Alliance, the thoroughbred industry’s accreditation program for national uniform racetrack safety and integrity standards. The 23 Alliance accredited racetracks host 90% of graded stakes and over 70% of wagering on thoroughbred races in the United States and Canada.

Steve previously served 12 years at Canada’s Woodbine Racetrack, where he was Vice President of Racing from 2008 to 2015. As vice president he oversaw all aspects of the Thoroughbred racing product as well as the company’s Racing Surfaces, Grounds and Stables, and Fleet divisions. During Steve’s term as vice president Woodbine enjoyed 40% wagering growth, continuous industry Best Practice ratings from the Safety & Integrity Alliance, and a considerable rebound from the collapse of Ontario’s Slots at Racetracks Program. In 2014/2015 Steve lead the business case and decision process that culminated in Woodbine’s $8 million main track synthetic surface replacement in 2016.

Throughout his career Steve has leveraged thoroughbred industry data for unique economic and business analyses. His series of econometric wagering demand models have been discussed at industry forums such as the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing and the University of Louisville Equine Business Program.

Prior to Woodbine, Steve worked for Keeneland and he was raised as a horseman at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Kentucky.

Steve participates on various industry boards including the Racing Officials Accreditation Program, Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory, The American Horse Council’s Unwanted Horse Coalition, and the Welfare and Safety Summit’s Racing Equipment & Safety Committee.

“Announcing at Keeneland: An Exercise in Restraint.”

Kurt BeckerKurt Becker was hired in the spring of 1997 to be the first track announcer in Keeneland history. A native of Illinois, he had previously called races on the Chicago circuit. Kurt also serves as an announcer for the Keeneland sales, a position which he has held since 2000, and he is an analyst for Horse Racing Radio Network’s coverage of the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, Kurt also serves as a play-by-play announcer for Motor Racing Network’s coverage of NASCAR racing, in addition to working as an announcer for Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Events.
